Sassi

Thursday 1 November 2012

In early October we headed to Sassi in southern Italy to stay in a stone-age cave that has been beautifully restored by philanthropist Daniele Kihlgrin. Taking a 9 month old crawling baby was a challenge but also a wonderful experience for all of us. Zeus spent 2 days on his father's back as we explored the abandoned and decaying caves in the village of Matera.

The cave itself was lit primarily by candlelight and was difficult to photograph well. It was minimal in decoration but had everything we could possibly need. Each morning we dined on local produce in an ancient church and by day we roamed around Matera in the beating sun. The daytime views were breathtaking and in the evening the sound of church bells echoed across the rocks and haunting opera singing filled the narrow streets. We created memories I will never forget.
