Roma

Sunday, 30 January 2011

I just returned from a wonderful couple of days in Rome which was everything I thought it would be. The buildings were incredible and Vatican City is like nothing I've ever seen but I mainly fell in love with the sculptures which span the city. Bernini's work left me in awe - from The Ecstasy of St Theresa to his depiction of Neptune... so beautiful!

This statue outside the Piazza Venezia was my absolute favourite...so romantic and full of emotion. Of course, a picture doesn't do it justice.

The sheer size of the Collosseum and the knowledge of the barbaric events that were held there was spine-chilling.

St Peter's Basilica literally took my breath away - the scale of the statues was humbling. The ceilings were painted in such detail and so beautifully. Unfortunately, photography in the Sistine Chapel isn't allowed but Michelangelo's ceiling was breath-taking. It really brought home just how powerful and wealthy the Vatican were (and still are).

The unmistakable rooftops of Rome... x
